C215 ARTWORK, CANS FESTIVAL, LEAKE STREET, WATERLOO

Artwork by C215 at the Cans Festival, Waterloo. C215 (born 1973) is a self-taught Parisian artist also known as Christian Guémy, who has dabbled in graffiti for 20 years, but only began his intricate stencilling in 2006. Of his artworks he remarks: "I like street scenes, cars, bikes, hands etc. but what I paint in the streets are homeless faces and my daughter, principally…portraits are a good trick to express a maximum of things. My homeless try to change people's opinions about beggars. I hope people will pay more attention to them after seeing my portraits. Most of these homeless portraits are based on a fantastic young French photographer, Rodolphe Simeon, but I also take pics by myself and some people send me pics. I place these images in 'nonplaces', in the streets and on devalued supports, tagged and rusty doors, teared paste-up, broken or burned walls and some bins that I particularly like".Digital image, 7th May 2008.
