PURE EVIL ARTWORK, CANS FESTIVAL, LEAKE STREET, WATERLOO

'Pearly King with Butterfly Wings' by Pure Evil at the Cans Festival, Waterloo. Born Charles Edwards in Wales (1968), Pure Evil produces stencils from a garden shed in East London. His first stencil was a simple one made when living in California. Inspired by West Coast graffiti he returned to London in 2000 and initially sprayed hundreds of vampire rabbits across the streets. He uses 'dark humour and twists symbolism to create new forms of what lurks around the corner on the secret streets of London - shedding light on the things under our noses that we never take the time to notice as we hurtle forwards into the future'. Although caught by the Police several times, he has evaded arrest because his look does not conform to that of the stereotypical graffiti artist. He remarks that you have to be 'quite Zen' about having your works destroyed.Digital image, 7th May 2008. From the Graffiti Gallery recording Lambeth's urban art.
