NADIE & ROADSWORTH ARTWORKS, CANS FESTIVAL, WATERLOO

Artworks at the Cans Festival, Leake Street, Waterloo. 'Nobody Cares' by the Spanish artist Nadie above a piece by Roadsworth (aka Peter Gibson) from Canada. His artwork spells out 'Little Boys and Their Toys' in a the form of a racetrack. Roadsworth is associated with controversial street images in Montreal, where he began in 2001 by spray-painting bicycles on roads to protest at the lack of bike lanes and to question 'car culture'. In 2004, he was arrested for these interventions and charged with 53 counts of mischief. Despite the threat of fines and a criminal record he received a relatively lenient sentence, which he attributes in part to the public support he received. The Festival, which ran from 3rd-5th May, was organised by Pictures on Walls and Blank Expression with the permission of the British Rail Residuary Board and Department of Transport. It was the world's largest exhibition of stencilled street art, and featured over 40 international artists, attracting 30,000 visitors. Digital image dated 7th May 2008. From the Graffiti Gallery recording Lambeth's urban art.
