Archbishop Tenison's School, Lambeth High Street, seen from the contruction site of the UN's International Maritime Organisation. The school was founded in 1706 by Archbishop Tenison at the west end of St Mary's graveyard for the education of 12 poor girls. In 1816/17 the school was rebuilt and combined with the parochial school for girls, educating approximately 200 pupils. The building shown here was erected in 1863 to the designs of William Rogers, but was demolished c.1994, when it was replaced with a hostel. The girls' school was closed in the late 1950s and combined with Archbishop Temple's Boys' School in 1961. Thomas Tenison also founded a boys' grammar school, which is now a comprehensive at The Oval. Photograph dated 6th November 1978
