HOP PICKERS, GOUDHURST, KENT

The Newman family from Kennington picking hops at Trottenden Farm, Goudhurst, Kent. Hop picking was often the main holiday for many London children, usually for a 4-6 week period until early September. It was done mostly by women and children, with men continuing to work in London and joining their families for the weekends. The accommodation was very basic, straw beds in the huts with cooking done on a camp fire. Work commenced at 7.00am and payment was per bin filled. Local shopkeepers in Goudhurst were however wary of the influx of urban children and erected grills within their shops for the duration of the picking season.Digital image by kind permission of Mrs Bateman.
