BONNINGTON SQUARE, VAUXHALL

BONNINGTON SQUARE, VAUXHALL

Victorian terraced housing along the south side of Bonnington Square, Vauxhall, with Vauxhall Manor School behind. A former resident, Sarah-Jane Cunningham, recalls: "The photo you have looking down towards the school in Bonnington Square just made me go back to my childhood because in was within that part of the road on the right of the picture near the bomb site that my family home in 1960 was and where I, and one of my brothers, was actually born in. At the property right at the end of the photo my godfather Arthur lived with his wife and two children. They moved in to the ground floor property from another house in the Square because the 'new' property had actually been converted in to self-contained flats with inside WC and an actual bath. The only sleeping rooms in the adapted property they had was a living room, also used as a bedroom for the parents and their daughter, and the son Peter had the other room. They stayed in the property until well in the 1980s and the sleeping arrangements, despite the daughter being two years older then me remained although she was a big woman sleeping in the same room as her parents. There was a sweet shop on that corner of Bonnington Square and, opposite my Nan's basement accommodation, was an Off Licence with a box by the sweet section for us small people at the time to stand on and pick our sweeties."
