COSTUME FITTINGS, SOUTH CONNECTIONS, OVAL HOUSE, KENNINGTON

Merle Greaves fitting Roy Weise with his 'Sailor King' costume at the Oval House Theatre, Kennington, in preparation for South Connections participation in the 2009 Notting Hill Carnival. Merle is a nurse who grew up in Trinidad, the Caribbean country traditionally associated with 'mas' (masquerade) costume bands. South Connections' part-sponsorship by Unison reflects the fact that it was sometimes known as the 'nurse's band' due to the number of nurses who helped organise and participate in the band each year. The designs for the 2009 carnival were by the fashion and costume designer Shaun Carrington, who has worked with South Connections since 2005.
