A bomb-damaged St John's church in Waterloo Road sketched during World War II. The roof and interior of the church were destroyed by a bomb on the 8th December 1940, although the 150 people sheltering beneath in the crypt were unharmed. St John's was restored in 1951 as the parish church to the Festival of Britain and has again recently undergone renovation.Pencil drawing by Edgar W. Pitt, dated July 1943.
