NANCY STORACE, SOPRANO

NANCY STORACE, SOPRANO

A portrait miniature of the operatic soprano Ann ('Nancy') Storace (1766 - 1817). She was a child prodigy and later embarked upon a close friendship with Mozart, who wrote the role of Susanna in the 'Marriage of Figaro' for her. She spent her latter years living in Herne Hill Cottage with four and a half acres of garden, now the site of Dorchester Drive (the Cottage probably later known as Herne Hill Lodge). She is buried in St Mary-at-Lambeth and a memorial designed by her friend Sir John Soane was erected by her mother. A coloured photogravure c.1900-1907, after John Conde engraving of 1793.
