A bird's-eye view of the gardens at Lambeth Palace as featured in The Graphic, 13th January 1883. The article states that although hundreds of admission tickets were issued to the poor of Lambeth, 'since the death of Archbishop Tait a question of unrestricted public access to the ark was raised'. However some caution was voiced to proposals as 'St James's Park has shown how much intrusion of the rough element can spoil the pleasure of quiet people.' It was not until 1900 that Archbishop's Park opened to the public on land donated by the then Archbishop.
