HENRY FAWCETT, THE LAWN, SOUTH LAMBETH ROAD, VAUXHALL

Professor Henry Fawcett and his house, The Lawn at No.51 South Lambeth Road in Vauxhall. Despite 'two stray shots from his father's gun when partridge shooting' causing instant blindness, Henry Fawcett became MP for Brighton and later Post-master General, introducing the parcel post, postal orders and a scheme for small savings. He had hoped his house would become one of the Parochial Free Libraries in Lambeth, however it was demolished along with adjacent dwellings to form Vauxhall Park. From the 'Lambeth Post' 16th July 1887.
