A rough sketch drawn by a member of the Clapham Antiquarian Society recording preparatory World War II works on Clapham Common, dated 26th September 1938. Random notes mention: 'There in morning, tents dump, guns, trenches', '?A hut behind CLapham Common tube. Trenches on big field opp[osite] & way towards Latchmere. Tents by p[ublic] lav[atories] W. side. Trenches by tennis c[our]ts W. side - N. of bowling green. Begun 26th, Agreement 30th. Finished Oct 2, guns gone'. However as war began a year later he notes, 'By Nov. 1939 the camp was permanent & unfenced - the huts painted green and brown splashes, the park shut to public'. His accompanying notes record, 'So far Oct. 12 1940, nothing of Old Clapham of importance has been hit or much damaged'.
