WORLD WAR II DEEP SHELTER, CLAPHAM COMMON

WORLD WAR II DEEP SHELTER, CLAPHAM COMMON

The World War II Deep Level Shelter built beneath the Northern Line under Clapham Common and opened in July 1944. This is the No.9 shaft and lift situated at ground level on Balham Hill, although the public were requested to use the 180 stairs adjacent to access the sixteen dormitory shelter areas beneath. Designed to accommodate 8,000 people during air raids, many of the original bunk beds are still in situ and the shelters were named in alphabetical order after British Admirals.
