The Hungerford and Lambeth Suspension Bridge - a chain foot bridge by engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel was built from 1836 at a cost of £80,000. It opened May Day 1845 and charged a halfpenny toll, however it was rebuilt 15 years later as a railway bridge serving the new Charing Cross Station.From Edward Brayley's 'History of Surrey', 1850.
