CANDLE MAKING, HAWES’ FACTORY, COMMERCIAL ROAD, WATERLOO

A wick cutting machine operated by a man and child for 'Dip' candle-making at the works of Messrs B.T. & W. Hawes in Commercial Road, Waterloo. The accompanying text recorded that the wicks are made from balls cotton, each weighing about three pounds, which are procured from Manchester. The strands are combined and cut using this machine, which uses just one operator to provide up to sixteen candlemakers with wicks. From The Penny Magazine, January 1842
