Elevation of a new extension for Messrs Ross Ltd, Optical Works at 31-33 Macaulay Road, Clapham. Accompanying the plans by architects Searle & Searle was a letter stating, 'In accordance with urgent arrangements made between our clients, Messrs Ross Ltd and the War Office our clients have agreed to erect an extension of their factory'. Although dated 1st November 1938, the government was hastely placing essential industries on a war footing, the year before the outbreak of World War II. From Drainage Records
