Celebrating the winner, Marlene Walker, of the beauty queen competition at the second carnival. Claudia Jones, seen on the left, was the editor of the West Indian Gazette and organised the carnivals and the beauty competition to boost the morale of the growing West Indian community in London. Carmen England, on the right, was a West Indian business woman who ran a successful hairdressing salon, 'Carmen' Commonwealth Hairdressers Ltd., in South Kensington and had her own range of Carmen England hair products.
