The Rev.J.Hawkins and his wife with two adopted Zulu children visiting St James's church in Park Hill Clapham. The 7-year old girl was born to the son of Zulu King Catawayo, but as a twin she was to be subjected to the traditional custom that requires the second child to be killed. However, when Rev. Hawkins was working as a missionary in Africa, the King approached him to take the girl, who was then given the name Lilian. The Clapham visit was to encourage English families to adopt African children facing a similar fate. From the South London Press, dated 17th December 1929, page 5.
