STOCKWELL ORPHANAGE: QUADRANGLE, GIRLS’ PLAHALL AND HOUSES

Spurgeon's Orphanage on Clapham Road, Stockwell. This photograph, taken in July 1929, shows the southern corner of the site.  From left to right are the swimming baths, the girls' playhall and part of the girls' houses. In the foreground are the mound and fixed staging that were used to stage pageants and gymnastic drills during the annual Festivals held on Founder's Day, a date near to Charles Haddon Spurgeon's birthday - 19 June.
