LA RETRAITE, ATKINS ROAD, CLAPHAM PARK

North side of La Retraite in Atkins Road, Clapham Park. Originally four large private houses including The Oaks, Springfield and Burlington House built by William Cooper in the mid-1800s, were bought by the French Roman Catholic order of La Retraite sisters who linked them to found a school in the1880s. One house was demolished to build a Chapel and dining hall in 1937 and further additions were made until the 1990s when the Convent was separated from the school. Postcard published by W. Stackemann.
