PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY

PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY

The writer and romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822). His two sisters Mary and Hellen were educated at a school for young ladies in Nelson Terrace, Clapham Common North Side. On one of his many visits to them he met fellow pupil Harriet Westbrook aged 16, and eloped with her in 1811 to Edinburgh. However, it was not a happy marriage and she drowned herself in the Serpentine in 1816. Digital image from Battley Brothers' archive.
