AUSTIN OSMAN SPARE

Portrait by Jim Manning of artist and occultist Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956) with his RSPCA badge on his lapel. After Spare's Elephant & Castle studio was bombed during WWII he moved to a basement in 5 Wynne Road, Brixton, living somewhat in poverty. Digitally enhanced negative. ID; 2023/1

Manning Photographers was founded in the late 1940s by James Manning, who was later joined by his son Frank. The studio operated from 1952 onwards in Windmill Row, Kennington until 2022.
