JIM AND BETTY MANNING, CHRISTMAS AT HOME

A Christmas photograph of photographer Jim Manning with his wife Betty, taken at home and dated 25th December 1952. Jim was demobbed after WWII, becoming a carpenter before picking up a camera and changing careers. Initially he knocked on neighbours' doors chasing commissions, before renting various studios and eventually settling in Kennington. ID: IV/362/Box127

Manning Photographers was founded in the late 1940s by James Manning, who was later joined by his son Frank. The studio operated from 1952 onwards in Windmill Row, Kennington and continued until 2022. Their extensive photographic archive of approximately 500,000 images was gifted to Lambeth Archives by Frank & Sandra Manning.
