GEORGE TINWORTH SCULPTING HENRY FAWCETT MEMORIAL

GEORGE TINWORTH SCULPTING HENRY FAWCETT MEMORIAL

The memorial statue of Postmaster General Henry Fawcett was created for Vauxhall Park, South Lambeth by leading Doulton sculptor George Tinworth (1843-1913). Presented by Sir Henry Doulton, it was unveiled on 7th June 1893 by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Although prominently placed at the centre of the park, it fell from favour with the council and was demolished in 1959. Fawcett's house stood on the site of the park, which was first proposed in 1887. From a boxed set of glass negatives produced by Doulton & Co Ltd, Lambeth, illustrating 'Tinworth Panels'.
