A gardener working in the central courtyard of Lambeth Palace, London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury. At the centre is the Great Hall, which currently houses the Library and was at the time assumed to be the work of Sir Christopher Wren. The Guard Room is adjacent to it on the right and St Mary's church tower in the background.Photographed using the 'wet plate' method by William Strudwick (1834-1910). He also worked as an architect, artist and writer. He lived for much of his life in Lambeth, but died in the Infirmary at Croydon Workhouse and was buried in the Paupers' Cemetery.
