ASTLEY’S ROYAL AMPHITHEATRE, LAMBETH: HANDBILL

Handbill from Astleys Amphitheatre, Westminster Bridge Road. Advertising the programme for Saturday 24th and Monday 26th April 1869. Built in 1769 by Philip Astley, who established the first circus consisting of a variety of performers and acrobatic displays, particularly outstanding feats on horseback. The theatre was demolished in 1893 and the site is now marked by St.Thomas's Hospital.
