LAMBETH PALACE, LAMBETH

LAMBETH PALACE, LAMBETH

Lambeth Palace and St.Mary's Church as seen from across the river at Millbank. The old horseferry building is seen in the foreground on the left, now the end of Horseferry Road. Andrew Ducarel noted in 1758: 'The Archbishops had the ferry boat at Lambeth - which they granted by patents to some of their officers. They received annually for many years only 20 pence, but of late 10 pounds. Upon the finishing of Westminster Bridge the ferry boat ceased and an equivalent in money was given to Archbishop Herring for the same, & to Mr Folkes the surviving patentee for his interest in it'.Pencil and watercolour wash, c.1770.
