Cardinal Pole, the Roman Catholic Archbishop appointed in 1556, took up residence at Lambeth Palace during the reign of Queen Mary. He built the long gallery facing the garden and made other improvements to the building. Engraving by H.T.Ryall from a painting by Titian, published by Harding and Lepard, 1836.
