CARON ALMSHOUSES, FENTIMAN ROAD, SOUTH LAMBETH

Detail showing front entrance and plaque of Caron's Almshouses. These were originally founded in 1618 by Noel de Caron to accommodate seven women aged over 60 and built on the west side of Wandsworth Road. In 1853 this site was purchased by Price's Patent Candle Company for £1,500 on the condition the purchase price was used to build new almshouses in Fentiman Road, which opened in 1854. The former site was sold in 1865 to the Phoenix Gas Light & Coke Company.
