John Howland was a successful city businessman and married in 1681 the daughter of Sir Josiah Childs, the Chairman of the East India Company. Their daughter Elizabeth married the Marquis of Tavistock , later the 2nd Duke of Bedford. Photograph of painting by John Riley in possession of Duke of Bedford.
