The Asylum for Female Orphans was founded in 1758, by the magistrate Sir John Fieldings. During 1824 the premises were replaced by this new building and The Mirror reported at the time: 'Two hundred destitute or deserted females are daily sheltered and protected from vice and want, supplied with food and clothing, and taught whatever can render then useful in their future situations. Carefully instructed in the principles of religion, reading, writing, and household matters, and trained to habits of industry, a supply of diligent and sober domestics is formed.' In 1866 the orphanage moved to Beddington in Surrey. Rear view with the chapel.
