HENRY VENN

Henry Venn (1725-1797) , was the curate of Clapham parish church from 1754 to 1759. He was an ardent early Evangelical preacher who was disillusioned by the lack of interest shown by rich members of his congregation to the plight of the poor, so he left Clapham and became Vicar of Huddersfield from 1759 to 1771. His son John Venn was rector of Holy Trinity Church, Clapham Common for 21 years from 1792. Venn Street, Clapham, is named after him. Photographic reproduction of an oil painting by an unknown artist, c.1775.
