PRICES CANDLES, NINE ELMS, VAUXHALL: ADVERTISEMENT

Prices candle-maker developed a new candle made from West African palm oil. They used the fashionable anti-slavery mood of the 1840s and 1850s as a way to promote their products. The advertisement shows the candle maker burning through the slaver's rope with his palm oil candle while offering the newly-freed slave the red cap of liberty. The message was that by purchasing Price's candles made from palm oil you were providing West Africa with an alternative trading economy to that of slavery.
