Tulse Hill Comprehensive School was built on the former playing fields of Strand Grammar School. It was opened in September 1956, and was said to be the highest school in London. Nine storeys high, it contained lifts capable of moving complete classes from floor to floor. The school roll of 1850 boys included Ken Livingstone, the first Mayor of London. The school was demolished during the early 1990s. Archaeological work on the site by the London Museum of London revealed an early Saxon settlement dating to the 6th century AD.
