St Paul's chapel was built in1815 as a chapel of ease to the new Holy Trinity parish church replacing the original Clapham Old Church following the increase in the congregation. The architect Christopher Edmonds kept the design simple and cheap, costing just £5,000 to build. An east end addition by Sir Arthur Blomfield in 1875 included a transcept and apsidal sanctuary.
