PORTLAND COTTAGES (OFF HEMANS STREET), LAMBETH SOUTH

Portland Cottages lay between Pascal Street and Hemans Street. This view, looking south, is taken from 37 Pascal Street showing the rear of Portland Cottages and the roof lines that lay hidden behind plain brick parapets. Taken shortly before they were due to be demolished as part of the Hemans Street Estate development, one of the first social housing schemes to be embarked on by Lambeth Council to provide quality low cost flats as a nationwide slum-clearance programme during the late1930s.
