BRIXTON EMPRESS, BRIGHTON TERRACE, BRIXTON

New Brixton Empress, Brighton Terrace, Brixton. The Empress theatre first opened in 1898 when Brixton was establishing itself as an important commercial centre, with large shops, a public library and two theatres. It was rebuilt in this Art Deco style as the New Empress to the designs of Andrew Mather, opening in October 1931, being used for variety, musical and other plays, revues and 'even talkies'. Taken between October 1966 and November1971, this photograph shows the theatre being converted into a Bingo Hall. Following a failed attempt to save the building in the late 1990s it was replaced by a block of flats.
