ST MARY’S CHURCH, LAMBETH NORTH

ST MARY’S CHURCH, LAMBETH NORTH

A detail from the 'Agas' woodcut map (compiled at the begining of Queen Elizabeth I's reign). This view, an artist's copy from the original, shows St Mary's Church with Lambeth Palace to its left. Bishop's Walk, on the bank of the River Thames, lies along the left edge of the illustration, and the river is just seen in the top corner. Though it is a fairly true copy of the old map, the clock has been added on by the artist.Watercolour by Jos. Jones, from a collection of his original watercolour illustrations and notes entitled 'Monumental Inscriptions, Arms & Co: in the Church & Churchyard of St Mary in Lambeth'. An introductory note states that 'These things were gather'd whilst the work was doing at Palace of the Archbishop of Canterbury 1749', signed G.Jo.Jones.
