Charles Haddon Spurgeon, 1834-92, is considered by some to be the greatest preacher of the Victorian period; the Metropolitan Tabernacle, near Elephant and Castle, was built to accommodate the huge congregations he drew. With the help of a gift from Anne Hillyard, widow of an Anglican clergyman, he founded Stockwell Orphanage in 1867 for fatherless boys. In 1879 the work was expanded to include fatherless girls.
