SPURGEON’S CONVALESCENT HOME, MARGATE, KENT

SPURGEON’S CONVALESCENT HOME, MARGATE, KENT

The photograph, taken from 'Within Our Gates', Autumn 1901, the quarterly magazine of Stockwell Orphanage, shows the family of the time in front of Spurgeon's seaside home in Cliftonville, Margate, Kent, that was opened in 1899. The seaside home provided a home and kindergarten school for very little children, a sanatorium to which delicate children were sent from the orphanage from time to time, and a convalescent home for children of the orphanage recovering from illness.
