Rev. V. J. Charlesworth, Head Master 1869-1914, a Congregational minister, had been co-pastor at with Rev. Newman Hall at Surrey Chapel for seven years before being asked by C. H. Spurgeon to become the first Head Master at Stockwell Orphanage at an annual salary of £150. His long service was typical of many at Stockwell Orpahange.
