‘HAY FEVER’ PROGRAMME, ST MARY’S HALL, CLAPHAM

Programme for a wartime charity production by the Glenn Players of 'Hay Fever' by Noel Coward at St Mary's Hall, St Alphonsus Road, Clapham. Brenda Hargreaves was one of the cast and recalls: "My maiden name was Brenda Rockett, which wasn't a very popular name back in those days during the war....I attended evening classes in drama....it was a huge relaxation for me to take part in amateur theatricals. We once put on a performance of 'Dangerous Corner' and a window of St Mary's Hall, Clapham was blown in and we had to make some hasty repairs to keep the draught out.' Her friend Nora's house in Streatham was bombed: 'When I visited her in hospital what struck me most forcibly was that, in spite of her injuries, losing her parents and her home, she could still say how much she enjoyed the play. I think it was at that point that I knew we were going to win the war."Digital image by kind permission of Brenda Hargreaves. From the Lambeth Archives Home Front project 2005.
