CIVIL DEFENCE RESCUE EXERCISE: WORLD WAR II

Emergency drill by members of Lambeth Civil Defence at the South Lambeth Road ARP depot. Those civilians not enlisted in the armed forces were encouraged to join various Civil Defence organisations that also included the Air Raid Precaution (ARP), Auxillary Fire Service (AFS), the Police Reserve and the Auxillary Ambulance Service. From an archive belonging to Stanley Rothwell, who was an artist and a male model before the war and joined Lambeth's Civil Defence service in 1939. He wrote of his wartime experiences in his memoir, 'Lambeth at War' published in 1981.From the Lambeth Archives Home Front project 2005.
