Stanley Rothwell painting two members of the Civil Defence unit based at the South Lambeth Road depot. Those civilians not enlisted in the armed forces were encouraged to join various Civil Defence organisations that also included the Air Raid Precaution (ARP), Auxillary Fire Service (AFS), the Police Reserve and the Auxillary Ambulance Service. Stanley Rothwell, who was an artist and a male model before the war and joined Lambeth's Civil Defence service in 1939. He wrote of his wartime experiences in his memoir, 'Lambeth at War' published in 1981. His paintings are deposited at the Imperial War Museum.From the Lambeth Archives Home Front project 2005.
