Kennington Common with St Mark's church and the Horns Tavern on the right. Kennington Park was later created on the site of the Common and was the first public open space in Lambeth. The London County Council acquired the park from the Duchy of Cornwall in 1889 and Lambeth Council took over the running of the park from 1971. One of the first mentions of cricket in Lambeth is from 1757 when a newspaper recorded: 'On Wednesday in the afternoon, as some young men were at cricket upon Kennington Common, one of them had the misfortune to have one of his eyes struck out by the ball.'Engraving by J & F Harwood, 1842.
