ST JOHN’S, ANGELL ROAD, NORTH BRIXTON

A plan of St John the Evangelist church in Angell Road, Brixton. Designed in the perpendicular style by Benjamin Ferrey, it cost £5,302 to build, this was given by William Stone Esq, of The Casino, Herne Hill. The land was donated by B.J.A. Angell and the church accommodated 1,150 parishoners, with Rev Matthew Vaugham being the first vicar. It was completed in 1853 and a vestry and parish hall were added north of the church in 1882. Angell Town was named after John Angell who died at Stockwell Park House in 1784 and who wished for a chapel to be dedicated to the saint of his name.
