The Manor House at Clapham was near to the old parish church. There had been a house on the site since 15th century when it was occupied by the Gower family. This was rebuilt in 1580 by Bartholomew Clerke who entertained Queen Elizabeth I in 1583. In 1749 it became a boarding-school for young ladies established by Mrs Margaret Castlefranc, but was demolished in 1837. Turret Grove now marks the site.Watercolour by J.P.Malcolm, dated 1798.
