VAUXHALL MANSIONS, VAUXHALL WALK

VAUXHALL MANSIONS, VAUXHALL WALK

Washing lines between the two tenement blocks of Vauxhall Mansions in Vauxhall Walk, between Laud Street and Glasshouse Walk. The 96 flats had become slums before they were purchased by the council in 1954. They were refurbished with lavatories, baths and hot water and renamed in 1957 Louise Court after Louise Jacob, owner from 1907-30. In October 2009 former resident Mr Abbot recalled; 'the blocks had four flats on each landing with four families sharing a cold tap and single toilet on the outside landing. The partition walls between the flats were of wood and people could hear what was going on in all the other flats. The rooms were riddled with bed bugs, which prompted the residents' affectionate nickname for the block, 'Catch It Mansions'.
