View east along Vassall Road, Brixton North, towards the church of St John the Divine. St John's was built in 1870-4 to the designs of George Edmund Street and was considered one of his finest works. It was damaged by an oil bomb on 21st-22nd September 1940 and then hit by a fire bomb on 16th April 1941 during World War II, destroying the lavish interior and stained glass. Rebuilding began in August 1955 by the architect H.S Goodhart Rendel and the church was reconsecrated by the Bishop of Southwark on 27th September 1958.Linskey Postcard Collection
