Frontispiece for William Malcolm's 'Catalogue of Hot-house and Green-house ..... Herbaceous Plants'. Malcolm (fl.1750s-1789) initially had a nursery in Kennington near the site of the Oval, but moved in 1788 to a 50-acre site in Stockwell, where he built a large house with extensive hot-houses and conservatories. This 1771 catalogue was one of the first published by a nurseryman as a scientific catalogue based upon botanic principles. His younger son William (1769-1835) continued the nursery after his father's death with various partners; Malcolm and Doughty (1805-10) and Malcolm and Sweet (1811). The nursery closed in 1792 and site redeveloped with housing.Engraved by John Frederick Miller of 10 Vauxhall Walk, after the drawing by his father John, published in 1771.
